Take a peek at your surroundings. Whether you’re cozying up at home, taking a break at the gym, logging in hours at work, or are on the go, I can all but guarantee you can point out at least a handful of technological devices nearby. In fact, there’s a high probability that you’re currently staring at the screen of an electronic device right now as you read these words.
In our ultra-connected world, most of us couldn’t imagine going an entire day without checking our cell phones, using our laptops, or turning on the TV. And while modern-day technology has undoubtedly improved our lives in countless ways, it also comes with a dark side – seemingly never-ending exposure to rising levels of the electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, emitted by our electronic devices. And these EMFs can have a particularly problematic impact on high-performers and athletes that rely on tip-top physical and mental execution.
Today we’re going to explore exactly what EMFs are, why they’re so detrimental to your health, how they can put a damper on your ability to perform, and most importantly – what you can do to protect yourself and uplevel your performance. Let’s dive in.
What Are EMFs: Electromagnetic Fields Defined
Electromagnetic fields, more commonly referred to as EMFs, are a form of energy generated by electrically charged particles. These invisible fields of energy are created by the motion and flow of an electrical current. EMFs are present everywhere in our world – with EMFs being generated by various natural and human-made sources such as:1
- Natural sources: The earth, the sun, and even our own bodies create natural EMFs.
- Electrical power lines and power substations: Power lines, electrical wiring, and electrical substations (which control the flow of electricity in power grids) emit powerful EMFs.
- Electrical appliances: Household appliances, such as computers, televisions, refrigerators, microwaves, and even hair dryers, release EMFs.
- Electronic devices and communication systems: Gadgets like laptops, tablets, smartwatches, Wi-Fi routers, and Bluetooth devices produce significant electromagnetic fields due to their wireless communication capabilities.
- Medical equipment: Medical devices like X-ray machines, MRI scanners, and certain therapeutic devices emit ionizing EMFs used for medical purposes.
- Industrial equipment: Various industrial machines, such as welding equipment, arc furnaces, and induction heaters, generate strong EMFs due to high electrical currents.
While we may not be able to detect these fields of energy in our day-to-day lives, their effects on human health are anything but invisible – especially if you’re a high-performer who relies on optimal physical and mental performance.
EMFs and Athletic Performance: Why EMFs Are A Concern for Athletes and High-Performers
Exposure to ultra-low levels of EMFs isn’t a problem in and of itself. Our bodies are well-equipped to handle a certain level of harmful or disruptive forces. In a perfect world, your body would have no problem neutralizing and coping with the small influx of these invisible energy fields.
But we don’t live in a perfect world – far from it. Our increasing reliance on technology that permeates just about every nook and cranny of our everyday world certainly comes with some incredible benefits. But it also comes with a massive spike in EMF exposure that’s nearly unavoidable in our modern-day environments. And the impact EMFs have on health and performance has sparked discussions about their influence – particularly in high-stress environments like sports and high-performance careers.
How EMFs Are Harmful and Can Hinder Optimal Performance
So why exactly do EMFs pose such a problem – especially for those in high-demanding, performance-focused environments and careers? To answer that question we must zoom in on exactly what happens beneath the surface when these energy fields penetrate deep into our bodies. Here's a detailed look at how exposure to EMFs can hinder optimal performance for athletes and high-achievers:2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
Physical Effects:
The negative effects of EMFs start all the way down at the cellular level in a process that goes something like this:
- Cellular stress: EMFs can induce stress responses in cells due to the disruption of cellular communication and signaling pathways – leading to cellular dysfunction and impaired recovery.
- Inflammation and free radical production: Chronic exposure to EMFs has been linked to increased inflammation in the body and a spike in the production of molecules known as free radicals – unstable and reactive molecules that cause damage to your healthy cells.
- Oxidative damage: If left unchecked, the inflammation and influx of free radicals induced by EMFs can cause oxidative damage – irreparable damage to your cells' structure and function.
This combination of effects can hinder recovery and performance, accelerate aging, impair immune function, and reduce overall endurance – all of which can create serious issues for athletes and high-performers.
Neurological Effects, Stress, and Mental Well-being:
As a high-performer, you rely on both your body and your mind to be firing on all cylinders. Your mental clarity, sharp cognitive function, and stable mental health are vital for making quick decisions, solving complex problems, and delivering consistent top-level performance.
EMF exposure can dull your focus and mental well-being in a few distinct ways:
- Cognitive performance: EMF exposure has been associated with cognitive deficits, including memory impairment and reduced focus.
- Sleep disruption: EMFs can interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone essential for regulating sleep. And sleep deprivation is a surefire way to put a damper on every level of your performance.
- Increased stress: EMFs can contribute to psychological stress by activating your sympathetic nervous system – the branch of your nervous system that puts you into “fight or flight” mode.
- Anxiety and mood disturbances: Chronic exposure to EMFs has been associated with increased anxiety and mood disturbances.
Because your mind is undeniably your most powerful asset for any top performer, the impact of EMFs on your concentration and mood can be particularly problematic.
Hormonal Imbalances:
Your hormones are designed to maintain a delicate balance. EMFs have been found to disrupt a few particularly important hormones which are:
- Cortisol dysregulation: EMFs can disrupt the body's natural cortisol rhythms, leading to imbalances in stress hormone levels. Elevated cortisol levels can hinder recovery and impact the body's ability to adapt to physical and mental stressors.
- Testosterone and estrogen disruption: EMFs may interfere with hormonal balance, affecting testosterone and estrogen levels. Hormonal equilibrium between estrogen and testosterone is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, bone health, and overall energy levels.
Hormonal imbalances can have a domino effect – once one hormone gets thrown out of whack it can throw your entire system off-kilter – even further impacting your ability to operate at optimal levels.
Energy and Vitality:
Athletes and high-performers require consistent energy levels for training, competition, and demanding tasks. EMFs have been linked to what’s known as mitochondrial dysfunction – an interference in the part of your cells that is responsible for energy production. Impaired mitochondrial function can lead to reduced physical endurance, lower energy levels, chronic fatigue, and reduced physical performance.
Recovery and Adaptation:
When you’re operating in a demanding environment, you count on your body to adapt to changing circumstances, training regimens, and stressful demands. EMFs may interfere with these adaptation mechanisms, affecting the effectiveness of training programs and your ability to execute them. EMFs can also delay recovery by hindering your body's ability to recover efficiently after intense physical activity – leading to decreased performance and an increased susceptibility to injuries.
Immune Function:
When you’ve got a team of people relying on you, you can’t afford to be under the weather. EMFs can suppress your immune system – making athletes and high-performers more susceptible to infections and illnesses that can disrupt training and performance. A weakened immune system can also make you more susceptible to what’s known as overtraining syndrome – characterized by persistent fatigue, decreased performance, and increased vulnerability to injuries.
While EMFs certainly aren’t the only piece of the puzzle when it comes to performing your best, exposure to these disruptive energy fields can absolutely put a damper on optimizing your achievements. And protecting yourself from EMFs might just be the secret to giving yourself an edge over the competition.
How to Protect Yourself From the Performance-Hindering Effects of EMF Exposure?
Entirely avoiding EMFS is all but impossible in our modern world – we’re all going to be inevitably exposed to rising EMF levels. And that’s okay – modern technology and the EMFs that come along with it have improved and upleveled our lives in so many ways.
The key to combating the harmful and performance-damaging effects of these inevitable EMFs is being proactive and taking a “big picture” approach. Here’s what you can do:
Boost Your Ability to Detox and Recover From EMFs:
As someone who’s used to bringing their A-game, you likely already have a healthy regimen that supports your physical and mental health. But there are a few key strategies you can incorporate to boost your body’s ability to detox and recover from EMF exposure which include:
- Earthing: The practice of earthing or grounding (putting your body into direct contact with the earth) can help stabilize your internal bioelectric environment and mitigate the impact of EMFs.
- An antioxidant-rich diet: Eating a well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet full of antioxidant-rich foods can help counteract EMF-induced free radicals and the oxidative damage they can cause.
- Reducing your toxic burden: EMFs aren’t the only environmental toxin that can impact your performance. Taking steps to reduce your overall toxic burden can help your body better cope with EMFs and other health-disrupting compounds.
While bolstering your ability to bounce back from exposure is crucial, it's equally as important to minimize the level of EMFs in your day-to-day life.
Minimize Exposure to EMFs:
Some ways you can minimize EMF exposure includes:
- Keep devices like tablets and cell phones away from your body when not in use.
- Unplug your Wi-fi router when you’re not using it.
- Use an ethernet cord instead of Wi-fi whenever possible.
- Keep your devices in airplane mode or off when you’re not using them.
Although these measures to shield yourself from EMFs are highly effective, a substantial portion of EMF exposure remains out of our control. Luckily, there's another simple and powerful way you can safeguard yourself.
