Functional Medicine Nutritionist: Judy

Judy is a pediatric nutrition specialist. She is a licensed registered dietitian with graduate and undergraduate degrees in nutrition and public health from the University of Vermont and University of Hawai’i. Her passion for all things nutrition began in high school when she discovered soccer – back when girls didn’t play – and how much stronger her game could be. Not only did Judy go on to letter in varsity collegiate Division I women’s soccer back when few schools even had teams, she won the Division 1 USASA National Cup title in her 30s with her Oahu-based team. All the while, she completed her graduate work and dietetic rotations across sites in Honolulu and Boston – and even managed to create, fund, write, and produce a television program on the unique mix of people herbs, and plant foods thriving in Oahu’s community food gardens. She went on to work in outpatient care for Kaiser Foundation Hospital, as a nutrition educator for a large health insurer, and as a grant write for a non-profit comprehensive care clinic.

Though she completed her degrees and RD in 1989, her real calling emerged with the birth of her son in 1996. He showed deep challenges from birth for feeding, growth, allergy, and more – and none of her pediatric providers could help. She dug into her training and expanded it, to help him and other children enjoy wellness and their full potential through integrative nutrition. Judy became a pioneer among dietitians in using functional nutrition for babies and kids with these problems. She authored the first accredited module for dietitians on nutrition and autism in 2008, has lectured widely for several national associations serving families with autism, and has authored three books on using nutrition to help special needs kids thrive. Her client families include those challenged by autism, ADHD, asthma, allergies, feeding and growth concerns, behavior/mood/learning concerns, constipation, and more who are ready for a whole food, whole body, functional nutrition approach.

What clients say
  • Good Morning Dr. Jill. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your story!!!! I wish I could hug you. I “coincidentally” came across an article if yours about healing the subconscious mind. As I then read your story I immediately connected with you. Although I haven’t had to fight physical ailments per say, emotionally is a different story altogether. My faith in God is my foundation, I’ve recently become awake “to the healing of yoga, the power of gratitude and more. My next bug hurdle is nutrition. I am a work in progress. Please keep writing and teaching. May He bless you and keep you. Dana

  • At the risk of gushing… I want you to know how much you are appreciated. Your inner light shines brightly for many in a dark, lonely world of ill health. Your caring heart comes through and that means a lot (along with your incredible wisdom). God has gifted you to do great things, and it’s obvious that you have not taken that “mission” lightly. Just know that your efforts do make a huge difference. We are so appreciative of the handful of doctors out there (you being at the top of that list, in my mind), who care enough to stretch beyond the borders of traditional training, take the time to figure it out, and go the extra mile to educate others. Your blog has been extremely helpful for me, and I return to it time and again for reference. I have, also, passed along your website info to many of my friends, who also have benefited from what you share. God bless you, Dr. Jill. You are one in a million!

  • While 33 years old and with 3 young children at home, I suddenly became extremely ill and was bed ridden.  I was treated by over a dozen specialists and no one could figure out what was wrong.  I was even referred to the Mayo Clinic, where after a week of testing I was advised to accept that I would always be chronically ill and told that if I wanted to try to leave the house I would be in a wheelchair. I remained in this state of unrelenting sickness for over two years.  Thank goodness for Dr. Jill! After finding her blogs online, I was able to see her in person where she looked me in the eye and said reassuringly “I will figure this out.  That is what I do. I won’t give up until we find something that will help you start feeling better.”  And she did and more! She found the cause of my illness, treated me for it, and now I am back to full health! I will forever be grateful for Dr. Jill and the life that I have back now thanks to her!  I highly recommend Dr. Jill.  She is the most intelligent doctor I have ever met and is truly gifted in diagnosing and treating patients with complex medical issues.

  • Although I know my daughter has shared her news, I must send my own praise for all that you have done. I wish I had a picture of the GI Physician’s face when he came out to talk to me after the colonoscopy. Quote: “There is nothing there!” He was amazed that she had no signs of Crohn’s… the biopsies came back negative!!” We are so grateful to you and your staff for being there for her. Your patients and the love that came across for her healing was always felt and I’m especially grateful to you for accepting her into your practice.

  • Dr. Jill has changed simply changed my life. I feel better than I have felt in years. I have more energy, more joy, and I can’t believe how fast I improved. In one day, I started noticing results and 3 months later, the improvement continues. For a decade, I had to give up more and more activities that I loved, due to inflammation and pain. I am now pain free, headache free and loving my new body and enjoying the activities that bring me joy. I can’t say that the changes I made were easy, but they are worth it. I am looking forward to the possibilities of my future. Thank you Dr. Jill for your intuitive wisdom, experience, and for giving me my life back!
