What if I told you that the same dye that was used to dye blue jeans their trademark denim blue color in the 1800s could be the secret to a happier, healthier, and longer life? While that might sound far-fetched at first, it’s actually true!
You see, a compound known as methylene blue was initially developed as a dye. But it’s quickly becoming a sensation in the world of health and wellness thanks to its extraordinary effects on the human body.
So today, we’re going to explore exactly what methylene blue is, the wide variety of benefits it can have for your well-being, how it exerts its health-boosting effects, and most importantly – how to go about choosing the right methylene blue supplement. Let’s dive in.
What Is Methylene Blue? And What Is It Used for?
Methylene blue is a synthetic compound named for its hallmark deep blue hue. Methylene blue was first synthesized in the 19th century and has since found applications in diverse fields – ranging from medicine to industrial processes. Here are a handful of the ways in which this unique chemical compound has been utilized:1
- In medical procedures: Thanks to its characteristic blue color, methylene blue is used widely as a contrast agent to stain tissues for microscopic examination (histology) and to visualize the urinary tract in certain diagnostic tests.
- As a dying agent: It’s also used outside of the medical industry to dye fabrics or as a stain in various chemical and biological experiments
- To treat methemoglobinemia: Methylene blue is used to treat conditions like methemoglobinemia – a rare blood disorder where the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity is reduced due to increased levels of methemoglobin.
- In treating neurodegenerative conditions: In recent years, methylene blue has attracted attention for its potential as a therapeutic agent in treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Methylene blue's unique properties and diverse applications have made it a valuable tool in medicine, science, and industry. But this blue-hued compound's benefits don't end there. Methylene blue has also been garnering increased interest in the world of biohacking and performance enhancement thanks to some impressive effects it can have on just about every facet of your well-being.
What Are the Benefits of Methylene Blue for Humans?
Methylene blue has been linked to some pretty remarkable benefits which include:
- Enhanced cognitive function, improved memory, and sharper focus
- Mood improvement and increased emotional well-being
- Brain support and neuroprotection (shielding your brain cells from damage)
- Increased energy
- Enhanced physical performance
- Decreased inflammation
- Anti-aging properties
- Improved heart health
- Decreased risk of chronic disease development
So how exactly can this unique substance have such wide-ranging and impressive effects on your health, performance, and appearance?
What Does Methylene Blue Do to the Body? How Methylene Blue Exerts It's Effects
Methylene blue is able to exert its health-boosting effects in a few different ways. Let’s zoom in on some of the most notable ways this fascinating compound impacts your body:2,3,4,5,6,7,8
Mitochondrial Function and Energy Production:
Your mitochondria are the energy-producing powerhouses of your cells. Within your mitochondria is a system of proteins known as the electron transport chain. The electron transport chain is a mitochondrial pathway in which electrons are shuffled around – subsequently releasing energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
Methylene blue acts as what's known as a redox agent or electron carrier within the electron transport chain. Meaning methylene blue facilitates the transfer of electrons, leading to increased ATP production – the primary energy currency of your cells. Improved mitochondrial function enhances overall cellular energy and optimizes cellular function.
Antioxidant Properties and Anti-Inflammatory Action:
Free radicals are reactive and unstable molecules that steal electrons from your healthy, stable cells. While free radicals are a natural by-product of many cellular processes, chronic inflammation can lead to an overflow of these unstable molecules. If free radical levels are left unchecked, they can begin stealing a surplus of electrons – leaving your cells damaged in a process known as oxidative stress.
Methylene blue acts as an antioxidant – neutralizing these harmful free radicals and pumping the brakes on inflammation. By scavenging free radicals and exerting potent anti-inflammatory effects, methylene blue helps protect your cells from oxidative damage and prevents the development of chronic diseases that stem from inflammation.
Nitric Oxide Regulation and Enhanced Cellular Oxygen Utilization:
Methylene blue can help supercharge your cells’ ability to function by optimizing the delivery of life-sustaining nutrients and oxygen. You see, methylene blue modulates the activity of nitric oxide synthase, which influences nitric oxide (NO) production. Optimal nitric oxide levels are essential for getting nutrients and oxygen to travel to every part of your body more efficiently. However too much nitric oxide can cause symptoms of hypotension and POTS. Methylene blue appears to inhibit nitric oxide synthase which is helpful in anaphylaxis and other cases of hypotension.
Methylene blue also promotes more efficient oxygen utilization – amplifying your cells ability to efficiently use available oxygen. This combination of effects can not only optimize function at the cellular level, but can enhance physical endurance and overall performance.
Neurotransmitter Regulation, Monoamine Oxidase Inhibition, and cGMP Stimulation:
Methylene blue is what’s known as a nootropic – a type of substance that can boost brain performance. It does this in a few distinct ways:
- Neurotransmitter regulation: Neurotransmitters are the signaling molecules your brain uses to communicate with other areas of your brain and the rest of your body. Methylene blue can enhance the release and reuptake of various neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.
- Monoamine oxidase inhibition: Once neurotransmitters are released, they are broken down by an enzyme called monoamine oxidase. Methylene blue inhibits monoamine oxidase enzymes – thus increasing the availability of neurotransmitters.
- Modulation of cGMP: Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) is a messenger molecule that plays a pivotal role in a number of functions throughout your body – and an especially important role in brain function and microglial activation after injury in brain or spinal cord. Methylene blue blocks the migration of microglia to site of injury and blocks excessive nitric oxide production and inhibits cGMP, all of which may reduce inflammatory damage at the site of injury. Down-regulation of cGMP has also been shown improve symptoms of migraine headaches and mast cell activation (MCAS).
This combination of effects can lead to improved mood, focus, learning, and overall cognitive function.
Neuroprotective Effects and Amyloid Protein Binding:
Neurodegeneration is progressive, and often irreversible damage to your brain and nerve cells. And in some cases, neurodegeneration can be accompanied by the accumulation of fiber deposits known as amyloid proteins – further hindering brain function.
Methylene blue has been found to have neuroprotective properties – shielding neurons from damage caused by neurotoxic agents, supporting nerve cell survival, and contributing to the prevention of neurodegenerative conditions. It’s also been found to bind to and stabilize amyloid proteins – slowing their aggregation and deposition in the brain.
With such spectacular impacts from head to toe, you’re probably wondering if there’s a catch – and if there are any concerning side effects that come along with taking a dose of methylene blue.
Side Effects and What to Expect When Taking Methylene Blue
When taking methylene blue for the first time as a supplement, you may experience various effects. While most of these effects are positive (like improved mental clarity, a boost in your mood, and elevated energy levels), there is a chance that you could experience some not-so-positive side effects as well, which may include:9
- Urine discoloration: One common and harmless side effect of methylene blue is blue or greenish-blue discoloration of urine. This is normal and temporary, typically lasting a day or two after supplementation.
- Digestive upset: In some individuals, methylene blue may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea or upset stomach. Taking the supplement with food can oftentimes help alleviate this.
- Headache: Rarely, some individuals may experience headaches or dizziness as a side effect – especially when taking methylene blue at higher doses.
- Interaction with medications: Methylene blue may interact with certain medications, including serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other psychiatric drugs. For this reason, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider before starting methylene blue if you’re on any medications.
- Allergic reactions: While rare, some individuals may be sensitive to methylene blue and experience allergic reactions. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, or swelling, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
In general, the side effects of methylene blue are quite mild. But if you have any preexisting medical conditions or concerns about drug interactions, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before adding methylene blue to your supplement regimen. It’s also crucial to ensure you’re choosing a high-quality methylene blue supplement from a reliable manufacturer.
So let’s dive into how to go about choosing the right methylene blue supplement.
How Do I Choose the Best Methylene Blue Supplement?
If you're considering adding methylene blue to your supplement regimen, it’s important to know that not all supplements are created equally. If you’re looking for a quality methylene blue supplement that will actually be able to deliver on all of its amazing benefits, here’s what I recommend looking for:
- Pharmaceutical-grade: First and foremost you want to ensure you’re taking pharmaceutical-grade methylene blue that has documented purity and potency – not industrial-grade methylene blue that can be full of contaminants and other toxic compounds.
- Independent testing certifications: Look for a seal of approval from respected third-party labs like Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), ConsumerLab, National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International, or U.S. Pharmacopeia. These organizations inspect supplements and their manufacturing practices to ensure they are adhering to the highest-quality standards.
- Proper dosing: Your methylene blue dosage will depend on a few factors (like your size and history of methylene blue supplementation), so you want to be sure you’re taking a supplement that allows you to obtain a proper dose.
- Clinical proof: There’s not a ton of regulation when it comes to the supplement industry. So it’s important to look for brands that have scientific studies to back up their claims along with proof that their products contain the exact ingredients used in said clinical studies.
- A commitment to improvement and education: Look for a methylene blue supplement sourced from a company that is transparent about their products and the efforts they are taking to continuously improve. And look for brands that are actively offering education to empower their customers to make informed choices and get the most out of their products.
So where exactly can you find a methylene blue supplement that checks all of those boxes?
Where Can I Buy Methylene Blue?
You can obtain prescription methylene blue from a licensed healthcare provider. While your regular family physician may not be so well versed in the benefits of methylene blue, most Integrative and Functional Medicine Practitioners will have an understanding of this health-boosting compound and be able to point you in the right direction. But if you want a simple, powerful, and convenient way to start taking methylene blue, I recommend Troscriptions.
Not only does Troscriptions check all of the above boxes by producing pharmaceutical-grade, physician formulated, and precision-dosed methylene blue supplements, but they have a unique formulation that makes them particularly powerful. You see, Troscriptions methylene blue is formulated as a buccal troche – which is a fancy way of saying a lozenge that dissolves in your cheek. As these troches dissolve over 15 to 30 minutes, they bypass first pass metabolism – allowing them to have a more rapid and potent effect.
In addition, each of their troches are scored so you can easily and reliably titrate the appropriate dose each and every time. Troscriptions has two distinct methylene blue formulations:
- Just Blue: Made with 16mg of pure pharmaceutical-grade methylene blue

I would do a double check on the purity of Troscriptions MB.
I asked for a Certificate of Analysis. They basically sent me instead a MSDS
It only said purity 99%. WHAT IS THE OTHER 1%. ? 1% of mercury, lead, cadmium or arsenic could be a big deal.
There supposed CoA provided no info on heavy metal ppm.
I highly recommend nobody consume a MB that does not have a CoA from a 3rd Party AND lists in ppm the amount of mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium.
Their certificate of analysis shows 100% clear of heavy metals – more here
I had the exact same experience – am not sure why they are so cagey about sharing their heavy metal analysis.
That’s why I prefer CZTL Methylene Blue. They are third party tested and also there are tests by other customers too.
It is a powder so needs a few steps to prepare which is the downside.
CZTL are scammers! I ordered MB from them – while they said that they had MB in stock, paid 80 USD. Couple of days later there were no updates on the order. I reached out to them on chat – asked them to provide the Track and Trace. Firstly they got back to me only 2 days later. They were coming up with plenty of arguments as to why I would need to wait for a whole month till I gonna get my MB. First, they said it is “in the air”, then they said its at customs, then they said there is a shipping delay, then they said its at 3rd party that clear customs for them – when i confronted to provide ANY proof that the order is being processed by any of these parties – they ignored me. Thankfully I was paying with PyaPal and could request a refund. DO NO ORDER FROM THEM, such experience makes me also doubt the actual quality of their product. I am still searching for a supplier here in Europe, all the brands seem to shop from USA and shipping costs alone are between 20 – 35 USD – that’s insane. Let, me know guys if you have a reliable brand or distributor here in the European Union. Will keep you posted if I find something.
Troscriptions certificate of analysis is available by request and shows third party testing negative for all heavy metals
I took methylene blue and did red light therapy for bartonella and it really helped. I think I have had a flare, is the product you are recommending potent enough for that purpose?
For Bartonella I typically prescribe higher doses in the range of 50-150mg daily but this would best be done under physician supervision to avoid any side effects or complications from the higher doses
I am a male, weigh 72kg and am 76 Y.O. I started with .01mg/kg daily, for a week. Then .05mg/kg daily, for another week. Then, I stopped for two weeks. Then, I used .1mg/kg daily, for two weeks. Then I went up to my max of .2mg/kg daily every other day and have been doing that for three weeks. I do aerobic exercise 1 hour every day. I have not noticed ANY subjective or measured changes in anything from mood to short-term memory to exercise tolerance to sleep (Oura ring) for any of the dosing schedules. I have 40 grams of exceedingly pure, crystalline MB (CoA verified) and so I could experiment for the next few years at any doses I want to, but I would love to hear your thoughts about if I should go higher in my dosing, or change the frequency or anything you might suggest, or even to stop my experimentation.
Thank you!
Do you ever prescribe methylene blue through a compounding pharmacy for your patients?
yes, we do!
dear Dr Carnahan , i am diagnosed with RA ‘
my body is full of toxic silicons ( brand : pip )this non medical silicones migrated through my whole body and to my brains
therefore i am very anxious to take supplements.
please it worries me when i read this”
Adverse effects
Gastrointestinal upset, headache, and dizziness may occur.
Excessive doses of methylene blue (≥7 mg/kg) can actually cause methemoglobinemia by directly oxidizing hemoglobin. Doses higher than 15 mg/kg are associated with hemolysis, particularly in neonates. May also dye secretions and mucous membranes and interfere with clinical findings of cyanosis.
Long-term administration may result in marked anemia.
Extravasation may result in local tissue necrosis.
at first i was so happy that i found MB but now
i ‘ve gotten afraid .
please can you help me about this MB and what higher doses can do wrong ‘
thanks so much kind regards Roos
Hi Roos,
Yes, I absolutely do not recommend higher doses above 30mg daily without a physician supervision of protocol and monitoring labs and symptoms. There are many potential side effects and interactions at higher doses.
warmly
Dr Jill
thank you so much for your reaction!💐
the only thing i am still anxious about is
and can you please let me know
in the article they mentioned not higher than 7 mg because then it can actually cause methemoglobinemia by directly oxidizing hemoglobin.😨
i gladly and gratefully was a former team member of the World championship dutch team but i can t ride horses anymore “ plastic surgeons and even my father broke down all my trust ,
i hope from the bottom of my heart you can show me that i will be safe with the just blue 🫶🏼
i get so afraid then bc there is no one in my region sealand where i can find help 😟
Hi Roos,
The side effects you pasted into your comment discuss doses above 7 mg PER KILOGRAM, not 7 mg. For someone who weighs 75 kg, that would be a dose of 525 mg (not 7 mg). Just FYI.
Have you prescribed Methylene Blue for people with long COVID? I would probably be classified has having long COVID because of my symptoms. However, I had COVID in 2020. Lost taste and smell. Recovered. Took second COVID shot two weeks before Memorial Day 2020. Developed Parosmia and distorted tastes. I have had a bunch of experts and tried every procedure that was I offered any possibility of hope. Nothing worked. I have also had intestinal issues sense 2020. Thank you in advance.
yes, I have used it in certain cases of Long-covid, especially POTS/dysautonomnia
