- Carrion's Disease: This condition, transmitted by sandflies, is characterized by two stages. The acute stage (Oroya fever) involves severe anemia due to red blood cell destruction, while the chronic stage causes red, wart-like skin lesions.
- Trench Fever: Spread by body lice, this condition primarily affects people in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions. Symptoms include recurrent fever, headaches, and bone pain, particularly in the shins, hence its other name, “shinbone fever.”
- Encephalopathy: In some cases, Bartonella can invade the brain, leading to encephalopathy, which is inflammation of the brain. This can result in confusion, seizures, and, in severe cases, permanent neurological damage.
- Pericarditis: This is inflammation of the pericardium, the protective sac around the heart. Bartonella can trigger this condition, causing chest pain, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, heart complications.
