What if I told you that the tap water you're drinking—even if it comes from a regulated municipal source—could contain hundreds of harmful contaminants, including cancer-causing chemicals, toxic heavy metals, and hormone-disrupting compounds? As a functional medicine physician who has spent decades helping patients overcome chronic illness, I've learned that clean water isn't a luxury—it's absolutely foundational to health. That's why I'm excited to share my research on the BOROUX water filtration system, a revolutionary countertop filter that's changing the game in water purification.
The Alarming State of American Tap Water
Before we dive into solutions, let's address the reality of what's flowing from your faucet. The latest research paints a concerning picture of water quality across the United States:
PFAS: The “Forever Chemicals” Crisis
PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s. You'll find them in everyday items like:
- Non-stick cookware (Teflon)
- Food packaging (pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags)
- Stain-resistant carpets and fabrics
- Cosmetics and personal care products
- Fire-fighting foams used at airports and military bases
The problem? These chemicals don't break down naturally—they accumulate in our bodies and the environment indefinitely, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” According to the U.S. Geological Survey's 2023 study, at least 45% of the nation's tap water contains PFAS.
Why PFAS Are Dangerous: When PFAS enter your body through contaminated water, they bind to proteins in your blood and accumulate in your liver, kidneys, and other organs. Over time, this buildup can lead to:
- Hormonal disruption: PFAS interfere with your endocrine system, affecting thyroid function, reproductive hormones, and metabolism
- Immune system suppression: These chemicals can reduce your body's ability to fight infections and may make vaccines less effective
- Liver damage: PFAS accumulate in liver tissue, potentially leading to fatty liver disease and reduced detoxification capacity
- Cancer risk: Studies link PFAS exposure to kidney, liver, and testicular cancers
- Developmental issues: Pregnant women exposed to PFAS may have babies with lower birth weights and developmental delays
Heavy Metals: Hidden Toxins in Plain Sight
Heavy metals in our water supply come from multiple sources, and their effects on health can be devastating:
Lead: Despite decades of regulation, lead contamination remains a serious problem. Lead enters drinking water through:
- Aging pipes and plumbing fixtures (especially in homes built before 1986)
- Solder used in copper pipes
- Municipal water systems with lead service lines
Even tiny amounts of lead are dangerous because there's no safe level of exposure. Lead accumulates in your bones and organs, where it can cause:
- Neurological damage: Memory problems, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes
- Cardiovascular disease: High blood pressure and increased risk of heart attacks
- Kidney dysfunction: Chronic kidney disease and reduced filtering capacity
- Developmental delays: In children, lead exposure can permanently lower IQ and cause learning disabilities
Mercury: This toxic metal enters water through industrial pollution, coal-fired power plants, and mining operations. Mercury is particularly dangerous because it crosses the blood-brain barrier and accumulates in brain tissue, causing:
- Cognitive impairment: Memory loss, difficulty thinking clearly
- Nervous system damage: Tremors, coordination problems, and peripheral neuropathy
- Reproductive issues: Mercury can damage developing fetuses and reduce fertility
Arsenic: While arsenic occurs naturally in groundwater, industrial activities and agricultural runoff increase contamination levels. Long-term arsenic exposure through drinking water can lead to:
- Skin problems: Darkening, thickening, and lesions on the skin
- Multiple cancers: Lung, bladder, kidney, and skin cancers
- Cardiovascular disease: Increased risk of heart disease and stroke
- Diabetes: Arsenic exposure may increase insulin resistance
Microplastics: The Invisible Invaders
Microplastics are everywhere in our modern world. These tiny plastic particles (smaller than 5 millimeters) come from:
- Breakdown of plastic water bottles and food containers
- Synthetic clothing fibers released during washing
- Car tire particles from road wear
- Plastic bags and packaging that degrade over time
- Personal care products (though microbeads in cosmetics are now banned in many places)
Recent research found that bottled water contains an average of 240,000 plastic particles per liter—and tap water isn't much better. What makes this particularly concerning is that these particles are so small they can:
Cross biological barriers: Microplastics have been found in human blood, lungs, placental tissue, and even brain tissue. Once in your bloodstream, they can travel anywhere in your body.
Carry toxic hitchhikers: These plastic particles act like tiny sponges, absorbing and concentrating other harmful chemicals from the environment. When they enter your body, these chemicals can leach out and cause additional damage.
Trigger inflammation: Your immune system recognizes microplastics as foreign invaders, leading to chronic inflammation that contributes to:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Autoimmune conditions
- Metabolic dysfunction
- Accelerated aging
Recent studies have linked microplastics in blood vessels to doubled risk of heart attack and stroke, making this an urgent health concern that we're only beginning to understand.
Chlorine and Disinfection Byproducts: The Treatment Problem
While chlorine effectively kills bacteria and viruses in water, it creates its own set of problems. When chlorine reacts with organic matter in water, it forms disinfection byproducts like:
Trihalomethanes (THMs) and Haloacetic acids (HAAs): These chemicals are known carcinogens that increase risk of:
- Bladder and colorectal cancers
- Reproductive problems and miscarriages
- Birth defects and low birth weight babies
- Liver and kidney damage
Chloramine: Many water systems now use chloramine instead of chlorine, but this chemical can cause:
- Respiratory irritation and asthma symptoms
- Skin and eye irritation
- Digestive problems
- Anemia in people with certain genetic conditions
Why Water Filtration Is Non-Negotiable
Given this contamination crisis, relying on tap water—even from regulated sources—is essentially gambling with your health. Here's why every household needs effective water filtration:
The Failure of Municipal Treatment
While municipal water treatment removes many pathogens, it's not designed to eliminate modern contaminants like:
- PFAS chemicals
- Pharmaceutical residues
- Endocrine-disrupting compounds
- Microplastics
- Many heavy metals
The Bottled Water Myth
Bottled water isn't the solution—it often contains more microplastics than tap water and contributes to environmental pollution. Plus, the regulatory standards for bottled water are often less stringent than those for municipal supplies.
Health Impact Across Generations
Clean water is especially crucial for:
- Pregnant women: Protecting developing babies from toxic exposures
- Children: Supporting proper neurological and physical development
- Individuals with chronic illness: Reducing toxic burden to support healing
- Anyone seeking optimal health: Providing the foundation for cellular function
Understanding Water Filtration: What Really Matters
Not all water filters are created equal. Many people assume that any filter is better than none, but the reality is more complex. Here's what you need to know about choosing a system that actually protects your health:
What Makes Filtration Effective
The key to effective water filtration lies in understanding how different contaminants are removed:
Activated Carbon Filtration This is the workhorse of water filtration. Activated carbon works like a powerful magnet for many contaminants:
- Chemical absorption: Carbon attracts and holds onto chlorine, pesticides, and many organic chemicals
- Physical trapping: Tiny pores in the carbon physically block particles and some microplastics
- Catalytic reduction: Some carbons can actually break down certain chemicals
However, not all carbon is the same. The source material (coconut shell, coal, wood), the activation process, and the particle size all affect what contaminants are removed.
Multiple Filtration Stages The most effective systems use several different filtration methods:
- Pre-filtration to remove larger particles and sediment
- Primary carbon filtration for chemicals and organic compounds
- Secondary filtration for specific contaminants like fluoride or heavy metals
- Final polishing for optimal taste and purity
Critical Certifications to Look For
Third-party testing and certification are essential because manufacturers' claims aren't always reliable. The key certifications include:
NSF/ANSI 53 (Health Effects): This certification means the filter has been independently tested to remove health-related contaminants like lead, mercury, and some chemicals.
NSF/ANSI 42 (Aesthetic Effects): This covers taste, odor, and chlorine removal—important for palatability but not necessarily health protection.
NSF/ANSI 401 (Emerging Contaminants): This newer standard covers pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other chemicals of emerging concern.
NSF/ANSI 372 (Lead-Free): This ensures the filter components themselves don't add lead to your water.

How BOROUX Compares to Other Water Filter Options
Understanding your choices helps you make the best decision for your family's health:
Compared to Basic Pitcher Filters
Most pitcher filters only address chlorine and basic taste issues. They typically:
- Remove limited contaminants (mainly chlorine)
- Require frequent filter changes (every 2-3 months)
- Have tiny capacity (usually 1-2 cups of filtered water at a time)
- Don't remove PFAS, heavy metals, or microplastics
- Even so, I still stand by my recommendation for Clearly Filtered which does filter these things should you want a basic option for your fridge – I have both!)
BOROUX systems, by contrast, provide 3 gallons of comprehensively filtered water with 12-month filter life.
Compared to Reverse Osmosis Systems
While RO systems remove many contaminants, they come with significant drawbacks:
- Strip ALL minerals from water, including beneficial ones like calcium and magnesium
- Waste 3-5 gallons of water for every gallon produced
- Require electricity and complex installation
- Often need expensive remineralization systems
- Remove beneficial minerals your body needs for proper hydration
Compared to Other Gravity-Fed Systems
Many gravity-fed systems make impressive claims but lack proper certification. Common issues include:
- Limited or no third-party testing
- Basic carbon filtration without advanced contaminant removal
- Poor build quality leading to frequent replacements
- Inadequate customer support and warranty coverage
BOROUX addresses these issues with comprehensive third-party testing, premium construction, and lifetime warranty support.
The Real-World Health Benefits of Clean Water
When my patients start using quality water filtration like BOROUX systems, the changes they report often go far beyond what they expected:
Immediate Improvements
Better Hydration: Clean water without chemical interference helps your cells actually absorb and use the water you drink. Many people find they feel more hydrated drinking less water.
Improved Taste and Smell: Without chlorine and other chemicals, water tastes and smells naturally fresh. This often leads to drinking more water throughout the day.
Digestive Comfort: Removing chlorine and other irritants can reduce digestive upset and bloating that some people experience with tap water.
Clearer Thinking: Reducing daily exposure to neurotoxic chemicals like chlorine byproducts and heavy metals can lead to improved mental clarity.
Long-Term Health Protection
Reduced Toxic Burden: Every glass of filtered water means fewer toxins accumulating in your liver, kidneys, and other organs. Over time, this can significantly reduce your total toxic load.
Hormonal Balance: By removing endocrine-disrupting chemicals like PFAS, you're protecting your thyroid, reproductive hormones, and metabolic function.
Immune System Support: Clean water reduces the daily stress on your immune system, allowing it to focus on protecting you from real threats rather than dealing with chemical exposures.
Cellular Health: Water supports every cellular function in your body, from energy production to waste removal. This is especially important as we age and our detoxification systems become less efficient.
Special Considerations for Vulnerable Populations
Pregnancy and Nursing: Clean water is crucial during pregnancy when toxic exposures can affect developing babies. PFAS and heavy metals can cross the placental barrier and appear in breast milk.
Growing Children: Children are more susceptible to environmental toxins because their organs are still developing and they drink more water per pound of body weight than adults.
Chronic Illness: If you're dealing with autoimmune conditions, chronic fatigue, or other health challenges, reducing your toxic burden through clean water can be an important part of your healing strategy.
Aging Adults: As our natural detoxification systems slow down with age, clean water becomes even more important for maintaining health and cognitive function.

The Connection to My Clean Living Philosophy
Water filtration is just one piece of the clean living puzzle. For comprehensive health, we need to address:
Clean Air
Proper air filtration and purification to remove indoor pollutants, mold, and toxins that can trigger immune dysfunction and respiratory issues.
Clean Water
Using advanced filtration like BOROUX to remove the hundreds of contaminants that can accumulate in our bodies and interfere with optimal health.
These three pillars work synergistically to reduce our total toxic burden and support the body's natural healing capabilities. You can't achieve optimal health while continuing to expose yourself to environmental toxins through contaminated water.
Clean Food
Choosing organic, locally-sourced foods free from pesticides, additives, and processing chemicals that burden our detoxification systems.
The Investment That Pays for Itself
When you calculate the true cost of quality water filtration, it's actually one of the most economical health investments you can make:
Immediate Financial Benefits
Bottled water savings: The average American family spends $500-1500 annually on bottled water. A BOROUX system pays for itself in the first year while providing superior filtration.
Convenience value: No more shopping for, storing, or disposing of plastic water bottles. No more running out of clean water.
Healthcare cost avoidance: While impossible to quantify precisely, reducing toxic exposures through clean water may help prevent expensive health problems down the road.
Long-Term Value
Lifetime warranty: Your investment is protected with a comprehensive warranty on the system components.
Durable construction: Food-grade stainless steel construction means decades of reliable service with proper care.
Stable filter costs: Unlike bottled water prices that fluctuate, filter replacement costs remain predictable and reasonable.
Cost Comparison Reality
- Per gallon filtered: Approximately 5-10 cents per gallon vs. $1-3 for bottled water
- Daily family cost: Under 50 cents per day for comprehensive filtration vs. $5-10 for equivalent bottled water

Big fan here. Met Dr. Jill a couple times at AIC’s in Orlando & Las Vegas. Have recommended you to several people in Colorado & one in NYC that will be visiting Denver in December. Hope she can get in.
I would like these articles to be print-friendly so that I can share with loved-ones, etc. Some of them print nicely & others (like this one) cut out valuable info along the page separations.
Thanks for all you do.
Thank you so much Julie! I will work on printer-friendly version
I was just curious what you think about buying Eldorado Springs artesian water which comes from a natural underground spring? Is it as pure compared to the water cleaned by the Boroux countertop water filters? I have been drinking the Eldorado Springs water for several years. It’s just a hassle to carry those one gallon bottles home from the store every week. I also heard that reverse osmosis water is not healthy to drink because it removes all the minerals from the water. What do you think?
Due to microplastics in most natural water sources, I think filtration is essential.
