Over time and with use, all batteries become worn out and tired – unable to function at their full capacity. Now imagine that each of your cells contains a tiny battery.
But what if there was a way to essentially “recharge” your little cellular batteries? A way to restore and amplify the natural energy in each of your cells so they can perform at 100%?
Thanks to modern technology's ability to tap into the power of pulsed electromagnetic fields that mimic those found in nature – we’re now able to re-energize and enhance our own cells' natural power source. Today we’re going to dive into exactly what pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is and how you can start reaping its impressive health benefits.
What Is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy?
An electromagnetic field is an invisible field of energy that’s created by the motion and flow of an electrical current. An electromagnetic field is a physical field produced anytime there are moving electrical charges traveling in a given direction.1
A pulsed electromagnetic field – or PEMF for short – is exactly what it sounds like. A PEMF is the controlled creation of an electromagnetic field in a pulsating pattern. PEMF therapy is directing these bursts of low-level electromagnetic fields into your body.
But Wait, Aren’t EMF’s Bad for You?
You may have heard that EMFs are bad for you and that exposure can be dangerous. And while certain EMF’s can be damaging to your health, the truth about EMFs is a little more complicated than that. You see, not all EMF’s are created equally – rather, they fall on a wide spectrum.
Some higher frequency man-made EMF’s – like those emitted by cell phones and wi-fi routers – can cause damage to your cells over time. To learn more about how man-made EMF’s can be dangerous, I recommend checking out the following articles:
- The Dark Side of Technology: How to Protect Yourself From EMFs
- Is 5G Safe? What You Need To Know To Protect Yourself From EMFs
But not all EMFs are bad. In fact, EMFs are found abundantly in nature. The earth, the sun, and even your own body produce EMFs.2 And accessing low-frequency EMFs similar to those found in nature can actually have a beneficial healing effect on the body.
What Exactly Does PEMF Therapy Do?
Each cell in your body is designed to be able to complete some basic actions such as:
- Generating energy
- Getting rid of waste
- Repairing itself
- Performing the specialized functions it’s programmed to do (this will vary depending on exactly what type of cell it is)
In order to complete these actions, your cells must be able to effectively move ions and electrolytes. Electromagnetic fields increase and promote the movement of ions and electrolytes – essentially allowing your cells to operate more effectively. This “boost” in your cells’’ ability to function, has been linked to a diverse and impressive list of health benefits.3
What Are the Health Benefits of PEMF Therapy?
Because PEMF therapy enhances cellular health and function, its benefits extend to the entire body. The list of health benefits continues to grow as research uncovers more of exactly how PEMF works, but so far, PEMF therapy has been credited with:
- Reducing pain4
- Decreasing inflammation5
- Accelerating healing6
- Improving circulation6
- Enhancing cellular regeneration7
- Boosting cognition8
- Supporting quality sleep9
Essentially the energy emitted from PEMF devices is transmitted to your cells, and in turn, your cells harness that energy to perform their functions more efficiently.
The catch with PEMF therapy though, is that it isn’t a one and done deal. To truly harness the power of PEMF therapy, you’ll need to use it consistently over time.
Can PEMF Therapy Be Harmful?
In general PEMF therapy is safe, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s for everyone. In certain cases, PEMF therapy may not be beneficial. Some scenarios in which you may want to approach the use of PEMF therapy with caution include:
- If you have implanted electrical devices: If you have an implanted electrical device like a pacemaker, cochlear implant, or intrathecal pump, PEMF applicators should never be placed directly over the implant site. The transmission of an electromagnetic field can interfere with the implanted device’s ability to function properly and could even shut off the device.
- If you’re undergoing active chemotherapy: Because PEMF therapy can induce cellular replication, it may be contraindicated if you’re actively undergoing chemotherapy as it may induce the proliferation of cancer cells.
- If you have a bleeding or clotting disorder: Because PEMF can increase circulation, it may increase your risk of bleeding if you already have a pre-existing bleeding or clotting disorder.
- If you’re pregnant: More research is needed to truly determine PEMF therapy’s safety in pregnant women.
- But don't worry if you have Electrohypersensitivity: A small (but growing) percentage of the population has a condition that causes them to be particularly sensitive to electromagnetic fields. If you’ve been diagnosed with or suspect you may have electrohypersensitivity, PEMF Magnetic frequencies may actually be beneficial if you use the right settings. Harmful EMFs negatively affect the body’s natural functions while therapeutic EMFs act in supportive ways, enhancing cellular communication and overall health. .
If you have any concerns about whether or not PEMF therapy would be right for you, I highly recommend seeking out the guidance of an experienced Integrative and Functional Medicine Practitioner. They can help you determine whether or not PEMF is a good fit for you, and help you come up with a plan to address the root cause of any symptoms or issues you may be experiencing. If you’re new to the functional medicine approach, I encourage you to read my article How To Find a Good Integrative and Functional Medicine Practitioner.
Are There Any Side Effects with PEMF Therapy?
Most people don’t experience any side effects with PEMF therapy, but occasionally PEMF can cause negative side effects. These negative side effects don't necessarily mean you need to stop using PEMF therapy – rather it’s usually an indication that it’s working.
Let’s look at a few of the common negative side effects you could potentially experience and what causes them.10
- Temporary increase in pain: Because PEMF stimulates your nerves and tissues, it can cause a temporary increase in pain as it induces healing.
- Aggravation of skin and tissues: PEMF increases circulation and this can cause aggravation and discomfort, particularly in the skin.
- A decrease in blood pressure and heart rate: While this is generally a good thing, if you’re elderly, on blood pressure medications, or prone to low blood pressure, this may cause feelings of lightheadedness and dizziness.
- Feeling fatigued or ill: Because PEMF therapy enhances waste removal and the release of toxins, this can sometimes leave you feeling a little under the weather as your body works to process them out.
Typically any negative side effects subside shortly after PEMF therapy. But if you have severe or prolonged side effects after PEMF therapy, I highly recommend only continuing with PEMF therapy under the guidance of an Integrative and Functional Medicine Practitioner.
How Much Does PEMF Therapy Cost?
The exact cost of PEMF therapy can vary greatly depending on what you’re looking for. If you’re just looking to test out PEMF therapy or have an acute issue you’d like to treat, you can often find a facility in your area that offers individual sessions. The cost will likely vary depending on your area but is typically under $100 for a 30-60 minute session.
If you’re really looking to reap the long-term benefits of PEMF therapy, the most cost-effective option is to buy your own PEMF machine.
How Do I Choose the Right At-Home PEMF System for Me?
Purchasing your own at-home PEMF system is an investment that can reap exponential benefits for your health. There are a number of excellent options on the market when it comes to at-home PEMF systems, but my current favorite is the HigherDose Infrared Mat.
This all-purpose mat is designed to be used for as little or as long as you’d like. There’s no setup or clean, all you have to do is unroll the mat. That means you can reap the benefits of this healing mat anytime – whether you’re lifting weights, practicing yoga, or simply laying down to listen to your favorite podcasts.
But the best part is, HigherDose has combined the power of PEMF therapy with some other powerful healing modalities to further enhance this mats healing properties. Let’s take a peek at exactly how it all works.
How Exactly Does the HigherDose PEMF Mat Work?
HigherDose’s Infrared Mat combines the power of PEMF therapy with far infrared heat – another powerful healing frequency that penetrates into your cells to fight inflammation, promote healing, and increase circulation. It also utilizes negative ion therapy and crystal therapy through its layers of amethyst, tourmaline, charcoal, and clay to further amplify healing. As the infrared heat warms the crystals, they begin producing negative ions which act kind of like antioxidants in the air – neutralizing free radicals and boosting your serotonin levels.
The mat also has different PEMF frequency levels to choose from depending on your needs. The lower frequencies are designed to be more relaxing and grounding, while higher frequencies are more stimulating and regenerative. But when it comes to which frequencies to use, you can’t go wrong. PEMF is designed to mimic the healing frequencies found in nature – so you’re essentially just giving yourself a concentrated dose of the good that’s already around you.
This incredibly powerful combination of therapies harnesses the power of the earth's natural healing properties to recharge your body at the cellular level – leaving you feeling relaxed, regrounded, and rebalanced. Using this mat in your home on a regular basis, is hands down the most effective and powerful way to truly tap into the potent healing capabilities of PEMF therapy. Thank you oh that’s great information I have shingles and I am wondering if you think it would help
Hi, my name is Dr. Robert Burns. A Chiropractor in Dublin, Ireland. I love the sauna blanket. Heals Asthma symptoms. Cleared out MRSA from a patient. Increases energy and the list goes on and on. Mental energy, way up. Recommend to use a 3 or 4 inch roller with the sauna blanket to enhance the cervical curve in the neck. Going to buy the Infrared mat. Thank you.
How would one know if they had a clotting issue? I have 2 mutations on the cardiac MTHFR. Would that be contraindicated? If one might have micro-clotting from Covid would that be a contraindication too?
I’m wondering same thing. I have clotting issue but my issue is thickened blood. I thought the author meant clotting disorders where the blood doesn’t clot- like hemophilia, for example. But I’m not sure.
yes, PEMF may actually be helpful in cases of hypercoagulabilty or increase blood viscosity
I see a Naturopathic who has me on the “Blood Type Diet” and has recently purchased a PEMF Machine. I have recently fractured my ankle and wondering if this will aid or speed up recovery. How many treatments do you recommend? And is there a particular brand of the higherdose infrared mat that you recommend?
Hi Irma
I use the HigherDose PEMF mat and recommend 20min per day on the level 4 if you are looking to improve bone density.
warmly
Dr Jill
How long are the HigherDose mats supposed to last? I see the warranty is only for one year. How much do you use yours?
Hi Emma
I bought mine in 2000 and still working just fine with no issues. I use it nearly every day!
Warmly
Dr Jill
